The province of Aymaraes is the largest of the seven provinces of the Apurimac region of Peru. The capital of the province is the city of Chalhuanca. The province was founded by General Simón Bolívar on June 21, 1824.

The foundation of the city of Chalhuanca took place on November 3, 1874. The province of Aymaraes was created on June 21, 1825 by the Liberator Simón Bolívar. By law of April 28, 1973, it became part of the department of Apurímac.

The province measures 1,242.33 square kilometers (479.67 sq mi) and is divided into seventeen districts: Chalhuanca, Capaya, Caraybamba, Chapimarca, Colcabamba, Cotaruse, Huayllo, Justo Apu Sahuaraura, Lucre, Pocohuanca, San Juan de Chacña, Sanayca, Soraya, Tapairihua, Tintay, Toraya and Yanaca.

One of the highest peaks in the province is Pisti at approximately 5,100 m (16,700 ft). Other mountains are listed below. The people of the province are primarily indigenous citizens of Quechua descent. Quechua is the language that the majority of the population (71.05%) learned to speak in childhood, 28.61% of the inhabitants began to speak using Spanish and 0.15% used Aymara (Census Peru 2007).
