Prof. Manuel Freire-Garabal was recognized with his father Prof. Manuel A. Freire-Garabal with the Honor Medal from the Governor Tony Montes of Lions Club International (Bahamas) and with the Coral Gables Merrick Lions Award (Florida, USA) by the nomination of the Galapagos Ambassador Dr. Luis Suarez Hernandez.

The awards where given by Lions International according to their multiple contributions to the health development and humanitarian aid, particularly during the COVID-19 crisis in the United States and Bahamas.

His Excellency (H.E.) Prof. Sir Manuel Alejandro Freire-Garabal Núñez MD, Ph.D., FRSM, is a Full Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). 

Born in Spain, he has a Medical Degree (1986) and a PhD in Medicine (1989) from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). Specialist in General Medicine by the Spanish Ministry of Health.

He has adquired complementary education in Drug Discovery and Development, Global Health, Management, Organizations, Finances, Economy, Law and Cybersecurity.

Currently, he is a Full Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela, lecturing in Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the Degree of Medicine.

He also participates in Master courses (Research and Development of Medicines; Healthcare Management; Clinical and Social Gerontology), Ph.D. training (Research and Development of Medicines; Comprehensive Healthcare; Clinical and Social Gerontology; Pharmacology; Clinical and Health Psychology) and other pre- and post-graduate educational activities (on Neurosciences, Mental Health, Stress and Health; Stress in high Risk Professions; Training Course for caregivers of Mentally Handicapped; Nursing Training; Pharmaceutical Industry; Oncology; Traslational Medicine; Emergency Medicine; etc).

Director of the Stress and Neuroimmunology Laboratory research group, originally dedicated to Psycho-Neuro-Immunology, developing strategies to reduce the impact of stress and living conditions on cancer, infection and autoimmune diseases. Nowadays, he is more involved in the discovery and development of new drugs against cancer, immune diseases and infection, having obtained new compounds, of synthetic and natural origin – including some from the sea – that can be useful in future prostate and breast cancer treatment.

Authored +100 publications, addressed 23 PhD, and have participated with +200 lectures, keynotes and communications to scientific meetings worldwide, having received 15 national and international awards.

He was member of the board of directors and advisor of several companies a where he had the opportunity to create products and solutions, develop strategies and design performance improvements.

Currently, he is also involved in the design and development of artificial intelligence applied to healthcare and higher education.

He had international executive responsibilities in higher education, science, healthcare and entrepreneurship. He was Advisor Responsible for International Relations of the USC for 10 years; during this time, he was in charge of the creation of one of the influential university international consortia in the world, the Compostela Group of Universities – still being member of its executive committee – and in the organization of outstanding international programs and meetings.
